Problem

At 500 K500\,\text{K} the equilibrium below is established in a rigid 2.00 L2.00\,\text{L} reaction vessel. CO(g)+2 H2(g)⇌CH3OH(g)Kc=14.0\text{CO}(g)+2\,\text{H}_{2}(g)\rightleftharpoons \text{CH}_{3}\text{OH}(g) \qquad K_c = 14.0 The following initial concentrations are measured in the vessel at a certain moment: [CO]=0.20 M[\text{CO}] = 0.20\,\text{M}, [H2]=0.10 M[\text{H}_{2}] = 0.10\,\text{M}, [CH3OH]=0.050 M[\text{CH}_{3}\text{OH}] = 0.050\,\text{M}. (1) Part 1: (a) Calculate the value of the reaction quotient QcQ_c for the mixture at this moment. (2) Part 2: (b) Determine whether the system is at equilibrium. If it is not, predict the direction in which the net reaction will proceed in order to reach equilibrium. Explain your reasoning. (3) Part 3: (c) Immediately after the measurements in part (a) are taken, an additional 0.050 mol0.050\,\text{mol} of CO(g)\text{CO}(g) is injected into the vessel while the temperature and volume remain constant. Calculate the new value of QcQ_c and again predict the direction of the net reaction. (4) Part 4: (d) Discuss whether the numerical value of KcK_c will change after the CO is added. Provide a chemical justification for your answer.
