Problem

Consider the inverse sine function. (i) State the domain and principal value range of y=arcsin⁡xy=\arcsin x. (ii) Explain the meaning of the term “principal value” when used with an inverse trigonometric function. (iii) Justify why arcsin⁡(12)=π6\arcsin\left(\dfrac12\right)=\dfrac{\pi}{6} and not 5π6\dfrac{5\pi}{6}, even though sin⁡5π6=12\sin\dfrac{5\pi}{6}=\dfrac12.
