Problem

For the quadratic function f(x)=ax2+bx+cf(x)=ax^{2}+bx+c, where a≠0a\neq 0, answer the following: (i) Derive an expression for the xx–coordinate of the vertex in terms of aa and bb. Hence write the equation of the axis of symmetry. (ii) Show algebraically that every point (x1,y1)(x_1,y_1) on the graph has a mirror image across the axis of symmetry, and identify the mirror image of the point (p,q)(p,q). (iii) Explain how the sign of aa decides whether the vertex gives the maximum or the minimum value of the function.
