Problem

A block of mass 0.60 kg0.60\,\text{kg} rests on a horizontal, frictionless surface and is attached to a light spring that is fixed to a wall. Initially the spring is at its relaxed length. A constant horizontal force Fapp\mathbf F_{\text{app}} is then applied to the block, pulling it away from the wall. The block slides slowly enough that it always remains at rest relative to the surface, coming to a new equilibrium position when the spring is stretched 0.080 m0.080\,\text{m}. The spring constant is k=250 N ⁣/ ⁣mk=250\,\text{N}\!/\!\text{m}. (a) Determine the magnitude of the applied force FappF_{\text{app}} required to hold the block in its new equilibrium position. (b) Calculate the magnitude of the force exerted by the spring on the block at that position, and state its direction relative to the applied force. (c) If the applied force were suddenly removed, describe qualitatively the immediate motion of the block and identify the net force acting on it at that instant.
