Problem

A molecule with molecular formula C2H4O is detected in an interstellar molecular cloud. Several different skeletal frameworks are possible for this formula. Complete all of the following tasks. (a) Propose two different skeletal frameworks that satisfy the valences of all atoms in C2H4O. Clearly specify which atoms are directly bonded in each framework. (b) For each skeletal framework from part (a), draw a complete Lewis diagram that obeys the octet rule, showing all lone pairs. (c) Choose the skeletal framework that contains a carbonyl group (C=O). For this framework, assign formal charges to every atom and state whether any atom violates the octet rule.
