Problem

Two large conducting plates are kept parallel to each other 5 cm apart. A student represents the electric field in and around the plates by drawing six equally spaced straight lines between them and two curved lines bulging outward just beyond each edge. (i) State whether the region midway between the plates is uniform or non-uniform in field magnitude. Justify your answer using the field-line diagram description. (ii) At a small square area of 1 cm21\,\text{cm}^2 located well inside the plates, all six straight lines pass through it. At an identical square area of 1 cm21\,\text{cm}^2 located just outside one edge, only two of the curved lines pass through. Assuming field magnitude is directly proportional to the number of field lines crossing a given area, calculate the ratio Eoutside ⁣: ⁣EinsideE_{\text{outside}}\!:\!E_{\text{inside}}.
