Problem

A 30 Ω30\,\Omega resistor is connected in series with a 0.15 H0.15\,\text{H} inductor to a 240 V240\,\text{V} (rms) AC source. (i) For a supply frequency of 50 Hz50\,\text{Hz}, calculate the inductive reactance, impedance, rms current, power factor, and average power consumed. (ii) The supply frequency is now increased to 100 Hz100\,\text{Hz} without changing the source voltage. Recalculate the quantities listed in (i) for the new frequency. (iii) Determine the ratios I100/I50I_{100}/I_{50} and P100/P50P_{100}/P_{50}, where the subscripts refer to the two operating frequencies. (iv) Based on your results, explain how increasing frequency affects both current and power in a series RR–LL circuit, and comment on whether the circuit becomes more resistive or inductive in behaviour.
