Problem

A researcher stores 5.00 g of helium gas in a rigid, perfectly insulated 10.0 L steel sphere. The gas is initially at 600 K and is then allowed to cool to 300 K while the volume remains constant. Constant values: • Molar mass of He = 4.00 g mol−1^{-1} • Avogadro’s number NA=6.022×1023 mol−1N_{A}=6.022\times10^{23}\,\text{mol}^{-1} • Boltzmann constant kB=1.38×10−23 J K−1k_{B}=1.38\times10^{-23}\,\text{J K}^{-1} (a) Calculate the total translational kinetic energy, in kJ, possessed by the helium sample at 600 K. (b) Calculate the total translational kinetic energy, in kJ, of the same sample after it has cooled to 300 K. (c) Determine the quantity of energy (in kJ) that must have been removed from the gas during the cooling process. (d) Describe, in terms of molecular motion, how the Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution for the helium sample at 300 K compares with that at 600 K.
