Problem

During an orienteering event a participant’s final displacement relative to the starting point has components 300 m300\,\text{m} along the positive x–axis and −400 m-400\,\text{m} along the y–axis. (i) Calculate the magnitude of this displacement. (ii) Find the direction of the displacement measured clockwise from the positive x–axis. Give the answer to the nearest degree. (iii) Write the same displacement in unit–vector notation using ı^\hat\imath and ȷ^\hat\jmath. State the numerical coefficients to two significant figures.
