Problem

A wooden block has dimensions 40 cm×20 cm×10 cm40\,\text{cm} \times 20\,\text{cm} \times 10\,\text{cm} and a mass of 5 kg5\,\text{kg}. It is placed on a horizontal table, first on its largest face, then on its intermediate face, and finally on its smallest face. Take g=10 m s−2g = 10\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the magnitude of the thrust exerted by the block on the table in each position. (ii) Determine the pressure on the table for each of the three orientations. (iii) Identify which orientation produces the maximum pressure and which produces the minimum pressure. (iv) Explain, with reference to your calculations, why the pressure changes even though the thrust remains the same.
