Problem

The maximum horizontal force FF that a student can exert on the end of a 0.40 m0.40\,\text{m} handle depends on the angle θ\theta between his forearm and the handle according to the empirical relation F(θ)=F0cos⁡θF(\theta)=F_0\cos\theta, where F0=250 NF_0=250\,\text{N} is a constant. The direction of the force is along the forearm and makes the same angle θ\theta with the handle. (a) Obtain an expression for the torque τ(θ)\tau(\theta) acting on the handle about the pivot in terms of F0F_0, rr and θ\theta. (b) Using calculus, determine the value of θ\theta that maximises τ(θ)\tau(\theta). (c) Calculate this maximum torque.
