Problem

A magnetic dipole of moment μ=0.10 A m2\mu = 0.10\,\text{A\,m}^2 lies in the x ⁣yx\!y–plane. The region contains two uniform magnetic fields: B1\mathbf{B}_1 of magnitude 0.05 T0.05\,\text{T} directed along the positive xx–axis and B2\mathbf{B}_2 of magnitude 0.12 T0.12\,\text{T} directed along the positive yy–axis. (i) Treating the dipole moment vector as confined to the x ⁣yx\!y–plane and making an angle ϕ\phi with the xx–axis, obtain an expression for the potential energy of the dipole as a function of ϕ\phi. (ii) Determine the value of ϕ\phi for which the potential energy is minimum. Show all necessary steps. (iii) Calculate this minimum potential energy.
