Problem

Let r=u−v\mathbf{r}=\mathbf{u}-\mathbf{v} where u\mathbf{u} and v\mathbf{v} are two non–zero vectors with magnitudes ∣u∣=a|\mathbf{u}|=a and ∣v∣=b|\mathbf{v}|=b. The angle between u\mathbf{u} and v\mathbf{v} is θ\theta (with 0<θ<π0<\theta<\pi). (i) Prove that ∣r∣2=a2+b2−2abcos⁡θ|\mathbf{r}|^{2}=a^{2}+b^{2}-2ab\cos\theta. (ii) Using the result from part (i), compute ∣r∣|\mathbf{r}| when a=12a=12, b=9b=9 and θ=150∘\theta=150^{\circ}.
