Problem

A rectangular metal block has mass 0.240 kg0.240\,\text{kg}. Its length, breadth and height measured with a metre scale are 8.0 cm8.0\,\text{cm}, 5.0 cm5.0\,\text{cm} and 2.0 cm2.0\,\text{cm} respectively. (i) Calculate the volume of the block in m3\text{m}^3. (ii) Determine its density in kg m−3\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}. (iii) The density of water is 1000 kg m−31000\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}. State, with reason, whether the block will float or sink when gently placed in water.
