Problem

Two sealed containers, X and Y, each hold 1.0 L of gas at 298 K and 1 atm. A verbal description of the particle-level contents is given below. • Container X: Every particle is depicted as an identical green sphere. The spheres are evenly dispersed and never touch one another. • Container Y: Half of the particles are red spheres and half are blue spheres. The red and blue spheres are distributed randomly throughout the volume and do not interact chemically. Answer the following questions about the classification of the matter in the two containers. (a) Identify whether the contents of Container X and of Container Y are each a pure substance or a mixture. (b) For each container, justify your classification by referring explicitly to the particle-level evidence provided in the description.
