Problem

A rigid 2.0 L container holds an ideal monatomic gas initially at 300 K. The container is slowly heated to 450 K while the volume remains constant. Boltzmann constant kB=1.38×10−23 J K−1k_{B}=1.38\times10^{-23}\,\text{J K}^{-1}. (a) Describe qualitatively how the shape and position of the Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution of molecular kinetic energies in the gas change as the temperature is raised from 300 K to 450 K. (b) Using appropriate reasoning, determine the percent change in the average kinetic energy of a single gas particle that accompanies the temperature increase. (c) Explain why the mass of the gas particles does not affect the relationship you determined in part (b).
