Problem

An ion of iron is represented as 2656Fe3+^{56}_{26}\text{Fe}^{3+}. The neutral atom of iron can also exist as 2657Fe^{57}_{26}\text{Fe}. (i) For the ion 2656Fe3+^{56}_{26}\text{Fe}^{3+}, determine the number of (a) protons, (b) neutrons and (c) electrons present. (ii) For the neutral atom 2657Fe^{57}_{26}\text{Fe}, determine the number of (a) protons, (b) neutrons and (c) electrons present. (iii) Calculate and compare the neutron–proton ratio for the species in parts (i) and (ii). State, with reason, which of the two is expected to be nearer to the line of stability.
