Problem

Let A(a,1,0)A(a,1,0) and B(2,3,−1)B(2,3,-1) be two points, where aa is a real number. A point CC divides ABAB internally in the ratio 2:32:3. (i) Find the position vector of CC in terms of aa. (ii) Prove that the magnitude of AC→\overrightarrow{AC} is 25\dfrac{2}{5} times the magnitude of AB→\overrightarrow{AB} for every real aa. (iii) Generalise the result: if a point CC divides the segment joining any two points AA and BB internally in the ratio m:nm:n, show that ∣AC→∣=mm+n ∣AB→∣|\overrightarrow{AC}| = \dfrac{m}{m+n}\, |\overrightarrow{AB}|.
