Problem

Let f(x)={x2−4,x≤1,ax+b,x>1,f(x)=\begin{cases}x^2-4, & x\le 1,\\ ax+b, & x>1,\end{cases} where aa and bb are real constants. (1) Determine all ordered pairs (a,b)(a,b) for which ff is continuous on the closed interval [−2,3][-2,3]. (2) For each pair (a,b)(a,b) you found in part (a), justify that there exists at least one number cc in [−2,3][-2,3] satisfying f(c)=0f(c)=0.
