Problem

The size of atomic nuclei is of the order 10−15 m10^{-15} \text{ m} , and the size of atoms is of the order 10−10 m10^{-10} \text{ m} . The mass of a proton is given as mp=1.67×10−27 kgm_p = 1.67 \times 10^{-27} \text{ kg} , and the rest mass of an electron, mem_e , is given as 9.1×10−31 kg9.1 \times 10^{-31} \text{ kg} . (1) Calculate the ratio of mpme\frac{m_p}{m_e} . (2) Is it reasonable to assume that the mass of an atom is very nearly the same as the mass of its nucleus?
