Problem

A cell of emf EE and internal resistance rr is connected to an external resistor RR. A voltmeter of resistance RvR_{v} is used to measure the potential difference across RR. (a) Derive an expression for the potential difference across RR when no voltmeter is connected. (b) Show that this potential difference equals E×RR+rE \times \dfrac{R}{R+r}. (c) When the voltmeter is connected across RR, derive an expression for the reading on the voltmeter. (d) Using E=1.5 VE = 1.5\,\text{V}, r=1 Ωr = 1\,\Omega, R=9 ΩR = 9\,\Omega and Rv=45 ΩR_{v} = 45\,\Omega, calculate (i) the true potential difference across RR and (ii) the voltmeter reading. Hence determine the percentage error introduced by the voltmeter.
