Problem
A compound microscope has an objective lens of focal length fo=0.5cm and an eyepiece lens of focal length fe=2.5cm. The distance between the two lenses (tube length) can be adjusted between 16cm and 18cm.
(i) For a tube length of 16cm, determine the distance of the object from the objective so that the final image is formed at the near point (D=25cm) of a normal eye.
(ii) Calculate the magnifying power of the microscope in the situation of part (i).
(iii) The microscopist now adjusts the eyepiece position so that the final image is at infinity while keeping the objective fixed. Find (a) the new separation between the two lenses, and (b) the corresponding magnifying power.
