Problem

A student is asked to discuss how thermal expansion influences the density of liquids. (i) Define density and explain qualitatively how a change in volume produced by heating affects the density of an ordinary liquid whose mass remains constant. (ii) Water behaves differently from most liquids in the temperature range 0 ∘ ⁣C0\,^{\circ}\!\text{C} to 4 ∘ ⁣C4\,^{\circ}\!\text{C}. Describe this anomalous behaviour in terms of both volume change and density change. (iii) Sketch a qualitative graph (no scale needed) showing the variation of density of water with temperature from 0 ∘ ⁣C0\,^{\circ}\!\text{C} to 10 ∘ ⁣C10\,^{\circ}\!\text{C}, indicating the temperature at which the density is maximum. (iv) Using your explanation in part (ii), state why aquatic organisms are able to survive in a lake even when the surface is frozen in winter.
