Problem

An artificial satellite completes one revolution around the Earth in 90 min90\,\text{min}. Take GME=3.986×1014 m3 s−2GM_{\text{E}} = 3.986\times10^{14}\,\text{m}^{3}\,\text{s}^{-2} and the Earth’s mean radius RE=6.37×106 mR_{\text{E}} = 6.37\times10^{6}\,\text{m}. (i) Convert the orbital period to seconds. (ii) Calculate the orbital radius of the satellite as measured from the centre of the Earth. (iii) Determine the height of the satellite above the Earth’s surface. (iv) Find the linear speed of the satellite in its orbit.
