Problem

A block is attached to two identical ideal springs that are arranged side-by-side (in parallel) and fixed to a rigid wall on a horizontal, frictionless surface. The block is pulled a small distance to the right and released, so that both springs stretch by the same amount. Assume the mass of each spring is negligible and air resistance is insignificant. (a) Describe qualitatively how the force exerted on the block by each individual spring compares with the force exerted by the combination of the two springs when the block is displaced the same distance from the equilibrium position. (b) Explain whether the potential energy stored in the system at a given displacement is equal to the sum of the potential energies stored in the individual springs. In your explanation, discuss the physical reason for any additive or non-additive behavior. (c) Suppose the zero of potential energy is defined to be at the equilibrium position of the block. Explain how changing this reference level would affect the values of the individual spring energies and the total energy of the system.
