Problem

A solid rectangular wooden block of weight 600 N600\,\text{N} has length 30 cm30\,\text{cm}, breadth 20 cm20\,\text{cm} and height 10 cm10\,\text{cm}. The block is placed on a level laboratory table in two different orientations. (i) Calculate the pressure exerted on the table when the block rests on its largest face (length ×\times breadth). Express your answer in pascals. (ii) The block is now turned so that it rests on its smallest face (breadth ×\times height). Calculate the new pressure on the table. (iii) By what factor has the pressure changed between the two orientations? State which orientation is likely to leave a deeper mark on a soft wax sheet kept on the table and give a brief reason.
