Problem

A vertical copper rod 20 cm20\,\text{cm} long is suspended so that it can move freely between the pole pieces of a strong magnet. (i) The magnet produces a uniform magnetic field of 0.8 T0.8\,\text{T} directed from east to west, and a current of 5 A5\,\text{A} flows upward through the rod. Calculate the magnitude of the force acting on the rod. (ii) Using suitable reasoning, determine the direction in which the rod will start to move. (iii) What change, if any, will occur in the magnitude and direction of this force if the current direction is reversed while the magnetic field remains the same?
