Problem

For the gas‐phase equilibrium A(g)+2 B(g)  ⇌  C(g)\text{A}(g)+2\,\text{B}(g)\;\rightleftharpoons\;\text{C}(g) measured at 600 K, the equilibrium constant in terms of partial pressures is Kp=4.00×10−2K_{p}=4.00\times10^{-2}. (a) Write an algebraic expression that relates KpK_{p} to the equilibrium constant Kp ∗K_{p}^{\,*} for the reaction 3 C(g)  ⇌  3 A(g)+6 B(g)3\,\text{C}(g)\;\rightleftharpoons\;3\,\text{A}(g)+6\,\text{B}(g). (b) Calculate the numerical value of Kp ∗K_{p}^{\,*}. (c) State whether Kp ∗K_{p}^{\,*} is greater than, equal to, or less than unity, and explain what this implies about the relative amounts of reactants and products at equilibrium for the rewritten reaction.
