Problem

For a non–zero real number aa, define fa:R→Rf_a:\mathbb R\to\mathbb R by fa(x)=ax+1f_a(x)=ax+1, and let g:R∖{0}→R∖{0}g: \mathbb R\setminus\{0\}\to\mathbb R\setminus\{0\} be given by g(x)=1xg(x)=\dfrac{1}{x}. (a) Determine all real values of aa for which the composition g∘fag\circ f_a is invertible as a function from its natural domain to its codomain. (b) For each admissible value of aa, obtain an explicit formula for (g∘fa)−1(x)(g\circ f_a)^{-1}(x). (c) Taking a=2a=2, verify that (g∘f2)−1(g∘f2(x))=x(g\circ f_2)^{-1}\bigl(g\circ f_2(x)\bigr)=x for every xx in the domain of g∘f2g\circ f_2.
