Problem

A beaker contains an aqueous solution in which the following species are all present at measurable concentrations: • NH3(aq)\mathrm{NH_3(aq)} • HSO4−(aq)\mathrm{HSO_4^- (aq)} • H2O(ℓ)\mathrm{H_2O (\ell)} • CH3COOH(aq)\mathrm{CH_3COOH(aq)} Answer the following about the acid–base behavior of these species at 25 ∘C25\,^{\circ}\mathrm{C}. (a) For each species, indicate whether it is capable of acting as a Brønsted–Lowry acid, a Brønsted–Lowry base, or both under the conditions described. Briefly justify each classification in terms of proton donation or proton acceptance. (b) For every species that can act as a base, write the formula and charge of the species produced when it accepts one proton from water. (c) For every species that can act as an acid, write the formula and charge of the species produced when it donates one proton to water. (d) Explain how the amphoteric nature of water influences the variety of acid–base reactions that can occur among the four substances listed above.
