Problem

A charged particle of mass mm and charge qq enters a region of uniform magnetic field BB with speed vv making an angle 30∘30^{\circ} with the field lines. (i) Derive expressions for (a) the radius rr of the circular component of the motion and (b) the pitch pp of the helical path. (ii) State whether the helix traced by a positive charge in this situation is right-handed or left-handed with respect to the direction of the magnetic field. What would be the handedness for a negative charge? Give reasons for both answers. (iii) A deuteron (m=3.34×10−27 kg,  q=+e)(m=3.34\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg},\; q=+e) enters a 0.50 T0.50\,\text{T} field with speed 5.0×106 m s−15.0\times10^{6}\,\text{m s}^{-1} at the specified angle. Calculate the numerical values of rr and pp.
