Problem

A 0.170 kg0.170\,\text{kg} hockey puck slides frictionlessly across level ice toward a rigid, vertical rink wall. Immediately before striking the wall, the puck’s velocity is 20 m s−120\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} directed 30∘30^{\circ} above the positive xx–axis ("to the right and slightly upward"). During the 0.015 s0.015\,\text{s} interval in which the puck is in contact with the wall, it rebounds such that its speed is 16 m s−116\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} directed 40∘40^{\circ} above the negative xx–axis ("to the left and upward"). Neglect any vertical forces other than the brief interaction with the wall and assume the puck’s mass remains constant. (a) Resolve the puck’s initial momentum into xx– and yy–components. (b) Resolve the puck’s final momentum into xx– and yy–components. (c) Determine the impulse delivered to the puck by the wall, expressing your answer with component form, magnitude, and directional angle measured from the negative xx–axis toward the positive yy–axis. (d) Calculate the average force exerted on the puck by the wall during the collision.
