Problem

A circle with centre OO and radius 5 cm5\,\text{cm} is given. Three points P,  QP,\;Q and RR lie on the ray OAOA such that OP=3 cmOP = 3\,\text{cm}, OQ=5 cmOQ = 5\,\text{cm} and OR=8 cmOR = 8\,\text{cm}. (i) For each of the points P,  QP,\;Q and RR, state whether it lies inside the circle, on the circle or outside the circle. (ii) For each point, state the exact number of tangents that can be drawn to the circle and give a reason for your answer. (iii) If SS is a point such that OS=x cmOS=x\,\text{cm}, explain how the number of tangents that can be drawn from SS to the circle depends on the value of xx. Justify your conclusion carefully.
