Problem

A uniform thin rod of mass MM and length LL is to rotate about an axis perpendicular to the rod and passing through one of its ends. (i) Starting from the standard value of the moment of inertia of the rod about an axis through its centre and perpendicular to the rod, derive an expression for the moment of inertia about the given end axis. (ii) Hence obtain an expression for the corresponding radius of gyration kendk_{\text{end}} in terms of LL. (iii) For L=0.60 mL = 0.60\,\text{m}, calculate the numerical value of kendk_{\text{end}}.
