Problem
The owner of a two-room flat requests an electrician to prepare the complete wiring layout from the street mains up to the individual room appliances.
(i) Draw a neat, labelled diagram showing the following in correct sequence: service mains, energy meter, main fuse, main switch, distribution board with two separate circuit lines, individual room fuses or miniature circuit breakers (MCBs), and the parallel connection of at least two appliances in each room. Use the standard colour convention for live, neutral, and earth conductors in your diagram.
(ii) Justify the need for a separate fuse or MCB for each distribution circuit instead of a single fuse for the whole house.
(iii) Explain why the earth wire of every three-pin socket is connected to the metal body of appliances such as an electric iron.
(iv) If one lamp in Room-1 becomes faulty (open circuit), describe what happens to the working of the other appliances in both rooms. Support your answer with principles of series and parallel circuits.
