Problem

Four matrices PP, QQ, RR and SS have respective orders x×yx \times y, y×zy \times z, z×tz \times t and t×xt \times x, where x,y,z,tx, y, z, t are positive integers. (i) Show that the product PQRSPQRS is defined and determine its order. (ii) Prove that PQRSPQRS is always a square matrix, whatever positive integer values x,y,z,tx, y, z, t may take. (iii) Derive an expression, in terms of xx, for the total number of elements contained in PQRSPQRS. (iv) Verify your result in part (iii) for the specific choice x=4,  y=2,  z=5,  t=4x=4,\; y=2,\; z=5,\; t=4.
