Problem

A hydraulic device contains water and consists of two pistons connected by a level tube. The small piston has an area of 8.0 cm28.0\,\text{cm}^2 and is situated 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} higher than the large piston whose area is 0.40 m20.40\,\text{m}^2. A technician pushes down on the small piston with a force of 200 N200\,\text{N}. Answer the questions that follow. (i) Determine the pressure transmitted to the level of the large piston. (ii) Calculate the maximum load (in newtons) that can be supported on the large piston under these conditions. (iii) State whether the load obtained in part (ii) would increase, decrease or remain the same if oil of lower density replaced water, keeping all other data unchanged. Give a brief reason.
