Problem

Ramesh rides his bicycle along a straight road. His displacement from the starting point is recorded as follows: • At t=0 mint = 0\,\text{min}, x=0 mx = 0\,\text{m}. • At t=10 mint = 10\,\text{min}, x=200 mx = 200\,\text{m}. • He halts at this point for the next 5 min5\,\text{min}. • By t=25 mint = 25\,\text{min} he has returned uniformly to x=50 mx = 50\,\text{m}. Answer the following: (i) Draw a neat displacement–time graph for the complete journey. (ii) From the graph calculate the velocity during each of the three stages of motion. (iii) Compute the average velocity and the average speed for the entire 25 min25\,\text{min} duration. (iv) Show, with calculations, that the magnitude of the average velocity is smaller than the average speed for this journey and state the physical reason for this difference.
