Problem
A rigid 12.0 L scuba tank is filled with air that behaves ideally. When the tank leaves the filling station its absolute pressure is 3.0 × 10⁷ Pa at a temperature of 18 °C. While the diver is on the boat, the tank warms uniformly in the sun to a temperature of 45 °C. The volume of the tank remains fixed and no air escapes.
(a) Calculate the new absolute pressure of the air in the tank after it warms to 45 °C. Express your answer to two significant figures.
(b) Show mathematically whether the pressure change is directly proportional to the absolute temperature change for this situation, and explain why your result is or is not proportional.
