Problem

An electric lift has an empty mass of 500 kg500\,\text{kg}. It carries four passengers each of mass 65 kg65\,\text{kg} from the ground floor to a floor 15 m15\,\text{m} higher in 10 s10\,\text{s} while moving upward at constant speed. Assume g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2}. Answer the following: (a) Compute the total work done by the motor in lifting the loaded lift to the higher floor. (b) Calculate the average power delivered by the motor during the ascent. (c) The motor is rated at 10 kW10\,\text{kW}. Show by calculation whether this rating is adequate for the given task and state the margin of safety, if any.
