Problem

Two identical, extensive conducting plates are held parallel to each other at a fixed separation dd and a potential difference VV. Neglect edge effects. (a) Starting from the definition of electric potential difference, derive an expression for the magnitude of the electric field between the plates in terms of VV and dd. (b) Using the result of part (a), state how the electric field changes if the potential difference is doubled while dd remains the same. (c) The field strength between the plates is measured to be 3.0×104 V m−13.0\times10^{4}\,\text{V m}^{-1}. Express this value in (i) kV/m and (ii) V/cm. (d) A student claims that 1 V cm−11\,\text{V cm}^{-1} is equal to 100 V m−1100\,\text{V m}^{-1}. Examine the claim and justify whether it is correct or incorrect with proper calculation.
