Problem
A student observes that when she tries to walk forward, her foot pushes the ground backward. Answer the following questions based on this everyday experience.
(i) State Newton’s third law of motion.
(ii) Explain, with reference to this law, why a backward force by the foot on the ground produces a forward motion of the student.
(iii) The same student now attempts to walk on a perfectly smooth horizontal sheet of ice while exerting the same muscular effort. Explain why she is unable to gain appreciable forward speed.
