Problem

Crude oil (density 850 kg m−3850\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}) is drawn from an underground storage 10 m below ground level and delivered through a vertical steel pipe to an outlet at ground level open to the atmosphere. The pipe has an internal diameter of 8 cm at the underground section and tapers gradually to 4 cm at the outlet where the speed of oil is measured to be 3.0 m s−13.0\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. (i) Find the speed of oil in the underground section. (ii) Determine the absolute pressure that must be maintained in the underground section to sustain the given flow. (iii) Calculate the mechanical power supplied by the pump if the flow is steady.
