Problem
Consider the data set:
4, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16.
(i) Find the range, mean, variance and standard deviation of the above data.
(ii) Each observation is first multiplied by 3 and the result is then decreased by 5. For the transformed data, determine the new range, variance and standard deviation without recomputing individual deviations from the new mean.
(iii) Verify numerically that your answers in part (ii) are consistent with the results obtained in part (i).
(iv) Write one brief statement comparing the relative spread of the original and the transformed data.
