Problem

Two stones S1S_1 and S2S_2 are released from rest from the same point at the top of a tall building. Stone S2S_2 is released 0.40 s0.40\,\text{s} after stone S1S_1. Neglect air resistance. (a) Derive an expression for the distance between the two stones at a general time tt (measured from the instant S1S_1 is released). (b) Using your result, calculate the separation between the stones when t=1.20 st=1.20\,\text{s}. Take g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (c) Find the minimum time after the release of S1S_1 at which the separation becomes 25 m25\,\text{m}. Round your answer to two significant figures.
