Problem

A toy car is placed on a frictionless straight track. The car is pulled toward the east by a string with a force of 12 N12\,\text{N}, while another child pulls it toward the west with a force of 7 N7\,\text{N}. Answer the following questions: (a) State the condition that must be satisfied by the forces acting on the car if the car is to remain in equilibrium. (b) Calculate the magnitude and direction of a third single force that should be applied so that the car remains in equilibrium. (c) If this third force is not applied, determine the magnitude and direction of the net force on the car and explain what will happen to its state of motion.
