Problem
Crude oil of density 8.5 × 10^2 kg/m^3 is pumped through a pipeline from point A at ground level to point B located 25 m higher on a hillside. The cross-sectional area of the pipe changes from 0.020 m^2 at A to 0.010 m^2 at B. At point A the oil speed is 1.5 m/s and the gauge pressure is 3.0 × 10^5 Pa. Atmospheric pressure is 1.01 × 10^5 Pa. Viscous losses are negligible.
(a) Determine the speed of the oil at point B.
(b) Calculate the gauge pressure of the oil at point B.
(c) The vapor pressure of the oil at the operating temperature is 2.0 × 10^4 Pa (absolute). Discuss whether cavitation (formation of vapor bubbles) is expected to occur at point B.
