Problem

Consider the piecewise–defined function f(x)={x2−1,x<3,mx+b,x≥3,f(x)= \begin{cases} x^{2}-1, & x<3,\\ mx+b, & x\ge 3, \end{cases} where mm and bb are real constants. (1) Part 1: (a) Compute lim⁡x→3−f(x)\displaystyle \lim_{x\to 3^-} f(x) and lim⁡x→3+f(x)\displaystyle \lim_{x\to 3^+} f(x) in terms of mm and bb. Show all work. (2) Part 2: (b) For which values of mm and bb is ff continuous at x=3x=3? Justify your answer. (3) Part 3: (c) Compute f′(x)f'(x) for x<3x<3 and for x>3x>3. (4) Part 4: (d) Determine all values of mm and bb for which ff is differentiable at x=3x=3. Provide a complete justification that addresses continuity and the equality of the one–sided derivatives.
