Problem

A hydrogen-like atom of atomic number ZZ is in a higher excited state of quantum number nn. The atom can transition to the first excited state by successively emitting photons of energies 10.2 eV10.2\ \text{eV} and 17.0 eV17.0\ \text{eV}. Alternatively, from the same excited state, it can transition to the second excited state by successively emitting photons of energies 4.25 eV4.25\ \text{eV} and 5.95 eV5.95\ \text{eV}. Determine the values of nn and ZZ. The ionisation energy of the hydrogen atom is 13.6 eV13.6\ \text{eV}.
