Problem

A porter lifts a suitcase of weight 200 N200\,\text{N} vertically through 1.5 m1.5\,\text{m} and then walks 50 m50\,\text{m} along a straight horizontal road while balancing the suitcase steadily on his head. (a) During the vertical lift, state the directions of (1) the displacement and (2) the force applied by the porter on the suitcase. (b) Calculate the work done by the porter on the suitcase during the vertical lift. (c) While the porter is walking horizontally, explain whether any work is done by him on the suitcase. Give a clear reason based on the directions of force and displacement. (d) Would your answer to part (c) change if the porter walked 100 m100\,\text{m} instead of 50 m50\,\text{m}? Give reason.
